To protect California taxpayers from the rampant tax increases that would become an annual occurrence if we ever lost Proposition 13, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has established a special campaign committee:
Protect Prop. 13, A Project of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association
Donations to this committee may be used for radio and TV ads, campaign mail, yard signs and all the other efforts that go into a campaign related to ballot measures.
Right now we’re gearing up to fight a “split roll” initiative that would end Proposition 13 protections for business properties such as supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, factories, warehouses, office buildings and every other type of commercial or industrial property. It’s called “split roll” because it splits the property tax roll — the list of all properties that are subject to property tax — into sections that are taxed differently. In California, all property has always been taxed under the same rules and rates. A split roll would divide the property tax roll into different categories, taxed differently, for the first time in state history.
We think it would be catastrophic for California’s economy and for consumers if property taxes were raised on every business in California at the same time, over and over again as real estate values rise.
And we think this would be just the first step in a plan to destroy Proposition 13 so property taxes can be raised on homes every year, without limitation.
Thank you for helping to protect Californians from higher taxes!
