An investigation by the Center for Investigative Reporting found tens of thousands of state employees have exceeded the official limit of 80 banked vacation days and two highly-paid officials even banked nearly two years in vacation time. With over 35,000 state employees exceeding the limit, the state is now liable for an additional $447 million. Analysts say state managers should improve enforcement of the 80 day limit, although some managers say they are short staffed and have difficulty finding employees to fill in for those who go on vacation.
