California’s Legislature recently approved gas taxes that are estimated to cost consumers over $50 billion over the next decade, but motorists will also pay additional taxes on gas they may be unaware of, reports the San Diego Union Tribune. The state Board of Equalization regularly adjusts gas tax rates, which can raise prices higher. Furthermore, motorists pay an additional 2 cents a gallon in taxes on underground storage and California is one of only six states that charges a sales tax on gas. The sales tax accounts for another 9 cents a gallon in taxes collected at the pump.
