Sales tax increases will take effect this week in many localities around the state, and if pending legislation succeeds, rates could go up as high as 11%, reports Dan Walters of the Sacramento Bee. Sales tax rates currently range from 7.5% to 10%, with rural counties generally boasting lower sales taxes. One proposal under consideration by the Legislature would increase the maximum by 1% if approved.
