The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s endorsement of Proposition 15:
“Today, Governor Gavin Newsom endorsed increased poverty, lost jobs and devastation for California businesses by announcing his support for the largest property tax increase in California history. Proposition 15 targets businesses at the same time they are struggling to survive his six-months-and-counting emergency shutdown of much of the state’s economy. If the COVID shutdown has proven one thing, it’s that the state budget suffers cratering revenue when businesses are hurt, ultimately hurting all Californians, and especially hurting low-income residents. High prices in California have given the state the nation’s highest poverty rate when the cost of living is taken into account – one in five California residents lives in poverty and millions more in near-poverty. Proposition 15 is a massive tax increase on the businesses where Californians work and shop. It will lead to lower wages, fewer jobs and higher prices. The governor of California has shown again that he has no understanding of the pain and struggles of ordinary people in this state. The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association will continue to fight to defeat Proposition 15 and all attacks on California taxpayers.”
