Recent tax increase proposals, including the “split roll” plan to eliminate Proposition 13 protections for businesses and a plan to impose a new tax on water, are both being presented as necessary to fund vital services. However, the real driver behind the motivation for new taxes is actually spiraling pension costs, writes the San Diego Union Tribune. The crisis will continue to grow worse according to independent projections unless Democrats confront powerful interests within their own party.
