Legislation currently advancing in the State Capitol under the banner of “reform” will actually reduce teacher standards and divert funds originally intended to help English learners and foster children, writes the San Diego Union Tribune. The proposals may allow more poorly performing teachers to remain in the classroom and use money meant for poor children to increase salaries instead. The paper notes these changes are not reform at all but are actually part of the agenda of the powerful California Teachers Association, one of the state’s most well funded interests.
