OPINION: Home is where the hurt is: How property taxes are crushing Illinois’ middle class

Property taxes have risen sharply for resident of Illinois, and a new property tax increase in Chicago could give Illinois the highest property taxes in the nation, writes policy analyst Austin Berg in the Madison County Record.  Since 1990 residential property taxes on people in Illinois have risen 3.3 times faster than the state’s median income.  Berg cites government employee compensation costs and labor costs as main factors behind the increased taxes.
