EDITORIAL: In San Diego Unified, pension tsunami is nearing shore
A plan to rescue the state teachers pension system from insolvency could also lead to serious hardships for school districts and new taxes, writes the San Diego Union Tribune. The San Diego Unified school district is one example of the challenges the plan will cause. The district currently faces over $30 million in budget shortfalls, but new pension obligations will add over $80 million to this shortfall annually by 2020.
