Recent studies by the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that U.S. labor unions have continued to dwindle to an all-time low. However, as these same studies show, these unions have dramatically increased their government influence and wealth, even during the recession.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the size of public workers unions has now passed that of the private sector. Since these workers are payed with taxpayer money, this fact helps explain the financial devastation that many union-controlled states are experiencing. The journal suggests that any effective budget reform will include the public unions' stranglehold on private income.

This report from the Heritage Foundation raises some alarming statistics on how Labor Unions have inside influence on the government and legislation. Aside from being a blatant conflict of interest, these connections are allowing Unions to have a continued stranglehold on policies concerning state benefits and pensions, which have drain the budgets of states like California.
