Listen to HJTA's latest radio ad, above, calling on citizens to demand Sacramento politicians adopt reforms, NOT HIGHER TAXES.

It's time to stop the madness in Sacramento and for politicians to start serving the people of California instead of themselves and their special-interest backers.

Here are just a few of the problems for which the politicians and their lobbyist buddies are to blame:

  • While California taxes are already at or near the top in almost every category, the budget will be nearly $16 billion short even with the proposed tax increase and Facebook revenues for the rest of this year and all of next.
  • Jerry Brown's budget plan would increase spending another 7% for the fiscal year beginning in July.
  • California has 12% of America's population and 33% of the nation's welfare recipients. (Extra high benefits, paid for by taxpayers, make the state a "welfare magnet.")
  • $62.1 billion in unfunded liability for government retiree's health-care benefits.
  • A half-trillion dollars in unfunded pension liability for government employees.
  • California state and local government employees are the highest paid in all 50 states.
  • Cash deficits are being covered by $15.2 billion of internal borrowing and $6.4 billion of external borrowing.
  • The Legislature allowed the state to borrow $865 million from internal accounts.
  • The California unemployment rate is 10.9%, second highest in the U.S. The U.S. average is 8.3%, and without California it would be 7.9%. California unemployment is 37% higher than the average of the other 49 states.
  • California is losing residents to other states — 154,000 net in 2010, the latest year for which figures are available. It is far more likely that we are losing our wealthier, ambitious and/or entrepreneurial folks. California is still a great place to reside if you are on welfare, work for the government or are connected to a favored special interest.
